History of HEAL
Professor Robert Bailey, Professor Nadine Peacock and a few of their friends and colleagues have been using personal funds to pay for school fees for several children in Kisumu, and they have donated funds to a few small community organizations. Martha Schnell, the Project Coordinator for the research study, along with Marisa Young and Nelli Westercamp, two students who had visited Kisumu as part of their graduate school experience, also expressed an interest in providing assistance to needy people in Kisumu. It was under these circumstances that we were persuaded to join together in establishing a small nonprofit organization principally to raise funds for people living in and around Kisumu district, Kenya. Thus Health and Education for African Lives (HEAL) was born.
HEAL's Articles of Association were adopted on July 9, 2007. Our board members have spent much time in Kisumu, have been in contact with organizations there and already have initiatives to support. We will first raise funds through board members, family, friends, and colleagues, but all supporters are welcome. There are currently two specific organizations and several individuals whom we are supporting and which we plan on continuing financial support. These two small nonprofit organizations, The Shinners Womens' Group and the Kisumu Initiative for Positive Empowerment (KIPE) could benefit greatly from our continued assistance.
